Bitcoin (BTC) is the native token of the Bitcoin network, designed as a decentralized peer-to-peer electronic cash system. Its tokenomics are characterized by a fixed supply, a programmatic issuance schedule, and a security model based on Proof-of-Work (PoW).

Issuance Mechanism

Bitcoin’s issuance is governed by a pre-defined algorithm that ensures a hard cap on the total supply.

• Maximum Supply: The total supply of Bitcoin is strictly limited to 21,000,000 BTC.
• Divisibility: Each BTC is divisible into 100,000,000 smaller units known as "satoshis."
• Block Rewards: New BTC are issued through "block rewards" granted to miners who successfully add a new block to the blockchain. This is the primary distribution mechanism for the 21 million tokens.
• Halving Events: The rate of new issuance is reduced by 50% approximately every four years (every 210,000 blocks). This process continues until the maximum supply is reached, which is estimated to occur around the year 2140.

Allocation Mechanism

Unlike many modern blockchain projects, Bitcoin did not have a private sale, ICO, or pre-allocation to a team or foundation.

As of late 2024, significant portions of the circulating supply are held by various entities:

• U.S. Government: Holds approximately 208,109 BTC (~0.99% of max supply).
• Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin ETF (FBTC): Holds approximately 196,721 BTC (~0.94% of max supply).
• Mt. Gox Associated Wallets: Approximately 79,957 BTC (~0.38% of max supply) remain in wallets associated with the historical hack.

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

The Bitcoin ecosystem relies on a circular incentive loop between users, miners, and the network.

Primary Token Utility

• Peer-to-Peer Payments: BTC enables the transfer of value without intermediaries.
• Store of Value: Due to its scarcity and censorship resistance, it is frequently used as a digital store of value.
• Transaction Fees: Users pay fees in BTC to have their transactions processed and included in a block by miners.

Incentive Structure

• Miner Incentives: Miners are incentivized to provide computational power (hash power) to secure the network. They receive rewards in the form of newly minted BTC (block rewards) and the transaction fees paid by users.
• Network Security: The Proof-of-Work mechanism ensures that modifying the blockchain history would require a prohibitive amount of energy and hardware, protecting the holdings of all tokenholders.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

Bitcoin does not have a traditional "vesting" or "unlocking" schedule for a team or investors, as no such allocations exist. However, it utilizes specific technical scripts for transaction conditions.

• Locking and Unlocking Scripts: Bitcoin transactions use a "locking script" (placed on an output) and an "unlocking script" (provided by the spender). A locking script defines the conditions under which BTC can be spent (e.g., providing a valid digital signature), while the unlocking script satisfies those conditions.
• Time-Locks: Bitcoin supports time-locked contracts (CheckLockTimeVerify or CheckSequenceVerify), which prevent BTC from being spent until a specific block height or time has passed. This is used in advanced applications like the Lightning Network or atomic cross-chain swaps.
• Distribution Timeline: While there is no "unlock" for a central entity, the programmatic distribution to miners is scheduled to last until approximately August 2115 for the majority of the supply, with the final satoshis being mined by 2140.
