Students from Lagos State have achieved remarkable success at the 2025 World Robot Olympiad held in Singapore, securing top-three positions. The three-day event took place from November 26 to 28 and featured more than 3,000 young innovators from 112 countries.

A 17-member delegation from Lagos, led by the state’s Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, competed in various categories. Their projects spanned electrical safety, agriculture, and mission-based robotics, earning recognition as one of Africa’s best.

This year’s Olympiad, themed “The Future of Robots,” recognised Nigeria as one of the top users of the WRO learning platform, indicating the amount of training the students undertook before the competition.

How Lagos teams turned classroom lessons into working robots

Three schools produced the standout projects. Okesuna Junior Secondary School from Lagos Island placed second in Africa with a Smart Guard Bot that detects electrical faults. Government Technical College in Ikotun developed a solar-powered agricultural robot and came third in the senior Future Innovators category. New Era Senior High School in Surulere ranked first in Africa for the senior Robo Mission challenge by excelling in timed tasks.

These results demonstrate how education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) enables students in Lagos to solve real-world problems. Each project addresses challenges the students encounter, such as overloaded electrical lines, tough farming conditions, and the need for safer, more precise automated tools.

The competition highlighted the importance of structured training. Schools with robotics kits, coaching, and practice modules for the World Robotics Olympiad (WRO) performed better than expected. The state’s investment in training teachers showed in how well teams managed design, coding, and testing under pressure during the competition.

What the results mean for Lagos state and the challenges ahead

One main benefit of the wins is increased visibility. Schools in Lagos can now better attract partnerships, grants, and mentorship programs in robotics. The projects also provide chances for testing ideas, especially in agriculture and electrical safety, where students’ concepts meet real community needs.

The growth of robotics education has its challenges. Many public schools do not have the necessary equipment or trained teachers to compete effectively. Keeping robotics equipment in good condition requires ongoing funding. If more schools become interested, the state will need a clear plan to improve training, upgrade facilities, and support technical maintenance.

Generative AI in Nigerian Education and the Struggle for Equity

Currently, the performance in Singapore represents another step in Lagos’ efforts to enhance STEM education. The team’s successes indicate that Nigerian students can compete on global platforms when provided with the proper tools, guidance, and opportunities to experiment.
