Bondi's ouster signals one of Trump's growing weaknesses: report

Pam Bondi is out as President Donald Trump’s Attorney General, and New Republic writer Perry Bacon says this is more than just the toppling of a Trump loyalist willing to wage lawfare against the president’s perceived enemies.

With Deputy AG Todd Blanche lurking in the wings, Bacon warned that what’s going to replace Bondi is going to be just as bad. But that doesn’t mean the American people can’t take a victory where they can — especially considering what this means in the ensuing war between Trump and democracy.

“[Bondi’s] dismissal is the latest sign of Trump’s growing weakness and the successful resistance to his authoritarian aims,” said Bacon.

And there has been resistance, reminded Bacon. Very successful resistance.

“The president had publicly complained in the fall about Bondi’s inability to prosecute his enemies. In a Truth Social post in September that reportedly Trump intended to send as a direct message to Bondi,” Bacon wrote.

“Pam: I have reviewed over 30 statements and posts saying that, essentially, “same old story as last time, all talk, no action,” Trump posted. “Nothing is being done. What about Comey, Adam ‘Shifty’ Schiff, Leticia??? They’re all guilty as hell, but nothing is going to be done.” … We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility. They impeached me twice, and indicted me (5 times!), OVER NOTHING. JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED, NOW!!!”

Still, Bacon pointed out that Bondi’s federal prosecutors failed to even file formal charges against many of Trump’s targets. A federal judge dumped the indictments for both Comey and James on the grounds that Trump’s U.S. attorney pick leading the prosecutions wasn’t supposed to be in that post in the first place.

Bacon said Blanche and any other DOJ puppet willing to take marching orders from a president and trash the DOJ’s independence will likely be facing the same judicial brick wall from judges and juries that Bondi faced.

Plus, with Trump’s removal of former Homeland Security head Kristi Noem, Bacon said Trump “appears to be reverting to the pattern of his first term, firing top officials instead of considering whether the president himself is the problem.”
